So What Did I End Up Doing With This?

Well, I went VERY orange!  So if you are an orange lover, you might like what I did and if not, you'll probably be going ewwww!  😁  My goal was to use as much fabric from my own stash as I could.

I got some GREAT feedback from my "Quilting Committee".  I had to giggle at the few who said this was not their cup of tea and to "chop chop!"

First of all, thank you to  Farm Quilter for introducing me to the technique of Broderie Perse.  I did not opt to use this method, but I learned something new!  I love learning new things.

Joni suggested a Ricky Tims "Convergence Quilt"

Quite a few of you said you would use a big print like this for a quilt backing.  LA Paylor hated the thought of cutting up this motif and liked the Deco feel to it.  Even though I don't normally do a lot with orange, and these colors aren't really what I use a lot, there was something about this print that just called to me not to cut it up into small bits.

Preeti volunteered to give it a home but her comment came about three days after I had already developed a plan and had become emotionally invested!  I have something else I am going to send her though.  Although I haven't had time to make one yet, you have got to see her cute little International Sisters block.  It is adorable!

Louise of My Quilt Odyssey sent me a file folder full of ideas for big print fabrics and I found a design in there that I really liked and decided to use.   It's called Denovo and is VERY similar to the idea that Sarah Aldrich suggested in her comment.

So here is my version!  I opted not to use black sashing because I thought it would make it look too Halloweenish.  And the reason there are tiny little black squares in the sashing is because I thought I was going to be just inches short of the orange.  Turns out, I had plenty.  I must have measured wrong!

Here's a closer view of some of the fabrics . . .

Here is a closeup of my favorite piece in this quilt.
It is an old Kaffe Fasset fabric from around 2008.  I'm so happy to finally get to use this piece AND the big deco flowers piece as well.  With the purple touches here and there, this quilt is much more vibrant in person than my crummy pictures show.

So this flimsy is not quite done, it is still waiting for a wide border.  I don't have enough of anything to make the border and I really would like it to be all one fabric and not pieced.  I've been surfing the web for some possibilities and came across this . . .

or possibly this?

Can you see either of these as a border? Maybe it will help to put them beside each other.

I'm kind of liking this floral

Maybe try black and white?

I haven't seen enough options yet.
I would love to hear my "committee's" opinions and suggestions!

I have been playing around with the vintage scraps I found last week so the next post will be about what I've been doing with those!  Have a happy week!

  1. Oh definitely the flowery fabric for a border--keep the good vibrations going-- lol ;)))
I was never an orange fan until I had to make a high school graduation quilt for my eldest grandson when he told me that his favorite color was ORANGE...I made him a spider web one and got more acquainted with orange...learning to love it now...hugs, Julierose

  2. Janice, what a great idea - that turned out wonderfully! The different prints you combined with the orange sashing just make this such a striking quilt. I like orange more and more! The pretty orange and pink floral will make a fun border, too.

  3. Well done!! It was a good pattern choice to showcase large prints.

  4. Oh, yeah!! It looks so great! I'm so glad that you chose the Denovo pattern, it works really well with those bold and beautiful prints. The floral with the hot pink flowers would make a fab border and pick up the pinky purples in the Kaffe fabric. Go big or go home on this one! :D

  5. Great solution, Janice!!! Is your original fabric an Amy Butler print? I think I would've made it into 10" squares and added it to my stack for future quilts. Interesting to read everyones ideas.

  8. Looks like the perfect pattern for the big floral orange fabric. Do you have or can you get more of any of the other fabrics involved in the quilt to use for the border. I am just thinking there is lots going on in the center, I'd need to calm them down a bit! JMHO;)

  9. it's wonderful! Great choices! I think the one with pinks might compete with the center, and like the idea of a really large print for border, so I guess, not being there, the orange and white one. But the black and white is so striking I want some for the stash.
I'd like to know what other patterns were in the file! LeeAnna

  10. What a fun quilt. Love the big prints you've used. I definitely like the purple roses on the orange background. But the orange and would work too.

  12. That is a wonderful use of large prints and the orange sashing does not compete with them. I also really like the diagonal movement of darks and lights on the surface. For the border I do like the floral or a subtle print as Vicki suggested. It seems that the two bold prints might compete for attention too much.

  13. Hi Janice! WOW - you did this fabric p.r.o.u.d. girl. Whether you love the print or hate it, it is definitely a changed piece of fabric. Toned down and complimented in the best possible way is what you did! LOVE it and I am so proud of you. I am an orange fan but it's not too orange if you ask me. I agree about avoiding the black sashing as that would have given it a Halloween turn for sure. Can't wait to see which border you choose. ~smile~ Roseanne

  14. Janice, that's the perfect pattern! And all the prints you've used compliment one another so well. Score!!! I'd probably go with the pink and red floral. And what backing do you have in mind? Inquiring minds want to know.....

  15. How, this has impact!!! I think it looks fantastic! Orange is not my favorite color but it's been growing on me a lot in the last year or two. I think this is stunning, Janice!

  18. I'm coming late to this party so my opinion probably doesn't count but of the two orange prints I like the orange and white print best. However, the black and white one would really pop! You could call the quilt Black and White and Orange All Over. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

  19. That was the perfect block for your large print. I am not completely sold on either of the two orange prints for the border, but I will be anxious to what you end up using.

  20. I love it just the way it is but think a plainer border would work well.

  21. A great pattern to use up that fabric Janice. I think the floral would be my choice, although the orange and white would work too. Not so keen on the black and white though. I think it needs the pattern next to the plain border fabrics.
