The Quilt I Made with a Giveaway I Won

I have been a VERY lucky girl these past few years and won quite a few giveaways.  I have decided that from now on,  whenever I win something from a site, I will make it a point to make something as soon as I can with my winnings and if extra fabric is needed, I'll buy it from that site.  I appreciate the generosity of those who have them and it's my way to say thank you!  PLUS it gives me something to blog about (grin).

Last June,  Paige Alexander at Quilted Blooms was asked by Bernie at Needle & Foot Fine Fabrics to curate a FQ bundle using fabrics in her store and also allowed her to run a giveaway for one bundle.  I was the lucky winner or Paige's bundle!  So I have been chomping at the bit for 6 months to make something with this fabric.  Christmas break was the perfect time!  Here are the 5 fat quarters that I won:

  • Dots in Yellow from Paint the Town by Striped Bear Studio (printed on GOTS certified cotton)
  • Dash in Pink from Dreamer by Carrie Bloomston
  • Raindrops from Paint the Town by Striped Bear Studio (printed on GOTS certified cotton)
  • Grid Paper in Green from Wordplay by Sarah Fielke
  • Frolic from Meriwether by Amy Gibson

I searched for a while and found a pattern online that was perfect for using up 5 fat quarters.  The pattern I chose to use is Garden Path by Amanda Niederhauser.  Here is her version . . .

Since I decided to use the Raindrops for the background fabric, I ended up buying a little extra of that and then choosing another fabric for the 5th fat quarter and also the border.

Here is what I chose for the 5th FQ . . .

Here is what I chose for the border:

And here is my finished top!  It went together very quickly!  So fun to make.  I didn't add in the 1 1/2" background strip around the blocks before the border like Amanda did so it's a bit smaller than hers.   It measures 48 1/2" square.

I'll be using the plum fabric for the backing and also the binding.  I sure do love that floral fabric.  Kind of wish I had bought some more of it. This was a fun bit of summer brightness right in the middle of winter.

Now I need to decide how to quilt it.  Would love to hear suggestions!  What would you do?  Oh, and also what color thread would you use?  I love hearing all of your ideas and am so appreciative when you share them with me.   I'm all ears!

  1. That's a good plan to use your winnings right away. I like the idea of it, although I usually tend to win when I have the least amount of time to actually make anything. Your quilt turned out to be fabulous - I love the fabrics you added to the set. It really ties all the pieces together.

  3. What a great pattern. That was a great fat quarter collection. I have no suggestions for a quilting plan, but maybe a variegated thread or perhaps yellow.

  4. I love that bundle and the pattern you choose to show it off. Great idea to use the fabric right way so you can order more if you need it. And it’s a wonderful thank you for the giveaway. I wonder what a sherbet-y variegated thread would look like for quilting. (It will show on the plum back.) I’m terrible at suggesting quilting since I’m so bad a choosing in any case. Maybe straight lines in both directions to make a sort of plaid and then something curvy like flowers in the raindrop squares? I’ll be watching what you do because that looks very much like a pattern I’d like to try. And I’m swooning over your border. I spent the day browsing online for background fabric for this year’s RSC (what a fun way to spend New Year’s Day) and that fabric would have been a fabulous choice.

  7. Great idea of using your winnings so quickly as well as supporting the sponsors! Your pattern choice is so pretty and your quilt is cheerful! I'm not very familiar with quilting ideas, but I would probably use a floral pattern of some sort. My LAQ loves using invisible thread with a higher loft batting to highlight the quilting design. I like how it comes out on my quilts. Good luck and Happy New Year!

  8. Congrats on your win and your idea sounds great to use it soon after winnning if you can. You flimsy looks great. How about a light yellow for thread or light pink. I think I would do an allover design with this one. Happy New Year!

  13. It’s quite pretty, Janice. What a good idea! I know sponsors will certainly appreciate it! To quilt it, I would keep it relatively simple. Maybe divide the rows into thirds across and down, producing a large grid, then do an orange peel in the nine patches. Borders always throw me, though, I so seldom use them. Maybe divide each side into thirds, too, then only the cornerstones would have a grid.

  14. So pretty!!!! It's a great bundle, and I love the pattern you chose. I remember it from when she & her blogger partner did quilts from 5 fat quarters. I need to go back to that series. These are such lovely fabrics chosen by Paige, and I like the floral you added to it. Great use of an awesome prize!

  16. What a great plan for any "winnings". You definitely won twice, once with the fabric score and then again with the finished quilt!

  17. I love it, Janice! The colors are so sweet and fresh, and the plum is perfect for the nine patch accent blocks. If I were quilting it, I'd probably do walking foot lines following along the seams but the width of the foot away. The nice even grid of blocks would be highlighted that way. Or maybe I'm just in a walking foot mood, LOL! In any case, you can't go wrong no matter what you choose with such a happy quilt :)

  18. It’s a great pattern to use up the fat quarter bundle and the result it lovely, it reminds me that spring is just around the corner, well almost. This is a great design for quilting in a grid I think and I would use a pale neutral, although you could take one of the colours from the light patterned fabrics which would blend better with the darks. I look forward to seeing what you decide.

  19. Thank you for supporting my shop - and for posting your philosophy on supporting the sponsors of giveaways. You are so thoughtful and I really appreciate it.

The quilt is just gorgeous - great use of the fat quarters and the BariJ floral for the border. I sure enjoy working with you Janice. :-)
