Finished Top! And More Advice Needed!

While I was waiting for backing to arrive for Ashley's quilt, I got sidetracked with a bag of 1980's scraps.  You can read about that here.  And here is my finished top.  I used almost all of the scraps in the bag.  That was so fun!

I had a glorious day off of work on Friday and spent the whole day putting it together.  It was my husband's idea to take this picture with the chair.  I think he is secretly pleased when he comes up with an artsy picture idea for me.   The chair looks bare, next time maybe I'll have a completed quilt draped over it!

I sure do enjoy getting everybody's input on decision making.  Thank you for all of your ideas and encouragement.  I feel so much more confident in moving ahead with all that help.

Next step is quilting!

This quilt is going to my oldest granddaughter.  Love those dimples!

She get's 'em from her beautiful mommy.  Her favorite color is purple.  Unfortunately, there is little to no purple in this quilt top!  However, I found a pastel lavender floral in my stash that I think will work!  What do you think?

I'm going to have to put this project on the back burner for a bit because Ashley's backing came in.  Now I need some opinions about what I am going to do next! I love hearing what you guys would do if it was yours.
As a reminder, here is what her quilt top looks like:

Here is the fabric we'll be using for the back of her quilt

With such a busy back, would you do a neutral thread or a more periwinkle thread in the bobbin?  And then what color thread for the top?  I might end up changing colors for each different stripe.   On the top, my plan is to stitch in the ditch around all of the lattice work and then do a different quilting motif on each stripe.  This is going to be a fun time learning all kinds of different free motion quilting motifs.

I'd love to hear what you would do!

  1. If I were doing an allover quilting design I would use a neutral light color thread. But if you are custom quilting each lattice I would probably use an orange, blue and neutral to match the strips. Just remember your darkest lattice might not show the quilting much, but those orange ones it will stand out nicely! Also if you run out of ideas for the quilting, search pinterest for some. Your GD is sooooo adorable-I am a sucker for dimples!

  4. I like the idea of periwinkle thread - that backing is gorgeous. (As is your grand daughter!! so cute.)

  5. Another vote for periwinkle thread! I'd use a neutral for the top, but that's because I'm a lazy quilter and wouldn't want to switch threads :)

  6. My only suggestion is to be mindful of the under/overs so the quilting doesn't detract from the piecing

  7. I would go with a neutral for the bobbin thread. That way you don't have to keep changing the bobbin when you do all your different motifs. That's going to look cool! Periwinkle could be considered a neutral in this case because of how well it will blend into the background. I think the key is for the bobbin color to not be too different from each of the top threads. So cream, although truly neutral, might be too light with a dark orange. Periwinkle is medium :)

  8. Ooh, periwinkle on the back would be so pretty. I’m not a lot of help for the front. I do like seeing color matched thread in other people’s quilts, but I tend to stick to neutrals partly because I would inevitably forget to change threads, but also because I sometimes have a hard time seeing threads against the fabric. Maybe audition some options until you go “Ooh!”

  9. It looks great. The photo with the chair is awesome. I struggle with photos and doing different things. Love the blue and orange quilt. I feel something in the each of the sections, but I don't know what. What about a variegated thread and then you don't have to change colours.

  10. My first answer didn't post, but the synopsis of my thought is to use gray in bobbin; colors on top. Hate typing on cell phones....

  12. You finished the 1980's quilt! I love it! I really love the backing choice for Ashley's quilt. I am a big fan of a light gray (like almost white) as a neutral. It would probably blend well across the whole quilt front and back.

  13. For the most part, I'm kind of lazy when it comes to switching out bobbin threads, so I'd probably go with a cream since there is a lot of it in the quilt top. If you are worried about 'pokies' showing through though then match it to the top thread, which makes for a pretty interesting backing. LOVE the finished scrap quilt too! I think the lavender backing for it is perfection. :-) Thanks for linking up with DrEAMi!

  14. Love the scrappy side trip! It's so colorful. I'm hopeless on the quilting stuff, I think either idea would work well. Looking forward to seeing what you decided.
