My Second Big Finish EVER!!!

The wrestling match is over!  It has been AGES since I was able to talk about a finished quilt but the day has finally come!   This quilt was made for one of my daughter's friends, Kenzi B.   And I seriously think this quilt may possibly weigh more than she does!

Kenzi picked all the fabrics and told me exactly what order to put them in.  LOVE specific instructions!

The strip finish sizes are 2 inches,  3  inches, and 4 inches in no particular size order.  The binding is a white with pink polka dot flannel.  The back is a white chevron minky that is super cuddly.

I found out AFTER I sewed it together that you don't need to use batting with minky.  No wonder I had to wrestle with it so much!  It was so thick, the only kind of quilting I could do is a straight line cross hatch with my walking foot.

Here she is!

Not really twin size but definitely a decent size lap quilt.  No fancy piecing here, just plain strips as Kenzi requested.  You know the old story about how Amish quilters leave in at least one mistake as a reminder that nobody is perfect?  I have LOTS of those reminders in this quilt.  Hee!  Hee!

I texted this picture to Kenzi to give her a sneak peak.  I hope she likes it!  I'm going to take it to her tomorrow as she is attending the university where I work.  I'll try to get a picture added of Kenzi with her new quilt!

So happy to have this finish!  Oh darn!  I forgot to add the label!  Pooey!  I'm going to have to show it to Kenzi and then take it right back home again.  Oops.

Next up will be to start quilting Ashley's quilt.  I'm going to have fun doing this one.  I'm going to try to do a different quilting motif in each stripe of color.  Not sure what I'm going to do in the white squares yet.     What would you do?
Wow!  I am not sure why these colors are so vivid in this picture!  The bright oranges are supposed to be coral and the purple is actually periwinkle!  Oh well.  I am looking forward to quilting this!

  2. I know you are extremely happy to have this one done, congrats on that! How big are those white squares? Perhaps outline them 1/4" from edge and be consistent with the design within them. How about a hook swirl.

  6. I feel your joy and i am so happy for you. The quilt turned out lovely, you made a great job of it, I think it's a great size and will surely keep Kenzi warm in winter. If you are quilting the grid on Ashley's quilt how about a diamond shape with an upright feather? It would be lovely and you are so good at quilting feathers. You could have them curling different ways, just thinking.......

  7. Congratulations on your finish, Janice!!! It is lovely and oh so snuggly. I have not worked with minky, so kudos to you on taming that beast. Jasmine of Quilt Kisses often uses minky for backing and she has several tips. Ashley's quilt is already lovely. I am sure however you quilt it, it will be even lovelier.

  8. Congrats! on your newly completed quilt. Have fun with the quilting on the next one. I think I would be tempted to put some sort of floral motif in the white squares.

  13. The quilt looks so snuggly--on you and on the bed. If Kenzi is like me it will send her straight to naptime. Maybe your label should include a warning to beware of using it for studying. :) Looking forward to seeing how you finish the other quilt. I'm not much help for suggestions for the white squares as those kinds of decisions involve dithering. Maybe choose your favorite? There are a lot of squares, so if you want one motif, you'll want to make it something you enjoy repeating.

  14. Hi, Jan. I just ran across this post and am glad I did. I had no problem quilting with minky even with 100% cotton batting inside. The first piece of minky I had and decided NOT to use was double sided and cost about $18/yd. It was indeed heavy. The minky I DID use was soft and light costing about $11/yd. It didn't add much to the weight of the quilt. To help quilt it, as it did not want to move on my machine either, I taped a Teflon grill mat on the machine bed after making a hole for the needle in it. I also wore gloves with silicone dots to help. It made a world of difference. I hope you give it a chance again.
