Yes, I know these do not look like scraps. That would be because I rarely use orange and the scraps that I do have would probably only make one small block even if I sewed them all together. So might as well use up stash. It's just sitting around!
The last time I worked with orange was when I found a large scale Kaffe Fasset piece of fabric from the 1990's in my stash (you can see 6 big pieces of it in this top) and wanted to make something featuring orange. Do you remember this one?
Not one of my favorite makes ever and it is still just a top.
In other news, last September I signed up for a Civil War Block of the Month. Here is the quilt we will be making:
We get a packet each month with fabric and patterns for four different blocks. Here are my first nine! And now that I've posted these I notice a booboo in block #4!
OK, I'm off to search for something to sew with my orange fabrics. And what kind of grandma would I be if I didn't post one of my cuties once in a while. This is Wyatt & Krsytel's youngest, such a love!
After a few hours of waffling over what to do with orange, I decided on a Scrappy Trip Around the World block that Bonnie Hunter designed. Here are the first two! Kind of busy! I tend to lean toward bright and colorful prints and then nothing goes together! I just don't have good luck with orange.
I have ordered stencil and a pounce pad to use to mark the quilting for my neutral log cabin quilt. I have never tried these tools before so we'll see how it goes! Do any of you use this method? If you've tried it, what did you like or not like about it?

A nice collection of orange, I am struggling with it too, I think it’s a love it or hate it colour and a little goes a long way. The blocks turned out great though, very colourful. What beautiful eyes your little cutie has, she’s adorable.
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks. What would make it stand out would be to insert a tone on tone white square where you have the polka dots. Or white with a tiny orange dot in all the blocks. And yes, I have used the pounce chalk. It works well. Use the white and not the blue. You can also get tracing tissue paper and copy a stencil onto it and then sew over the paper.
ReplyDeleteI like your orange Scrappy Trip blocks, Janice! If you keep a consistent dark or light fabric going through the center of every block, that would unify the whole quilt, no matter what color the rest of the block was. Your little grand girl is adorable!

ReplyDeleteI love that orange top. You did a great job with it. But if orange isn't your color you'll probably never love it. I like your RSC block. I'm still trying to figure out which block I want to make. I've tried two different ones but haven't fallen in love with either.

ReplyDeleteI rarely use orange and frankly don't really like the color. However, several of my most recent projects have orange in them...all I can tell you is my favorite colors (teal and purple) really pop with a little orange! I don't have enough orange in my stash to make a whole quilt. Looking forward to seeing your trip around the world. Pounce...I didn't like it. It was hard to get it on my quilt and when it did get there, it had a way of bouncing off before I got there. If you have the same problem, Golden Threads makes a thin paper you can trace the design on and tape it to your quilt. I would use a longer stitch length - like 10 spi - because sometimes you need to pick the little pieces out from under the stitches with tweezers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie! My goodness, that's a great photograph. Oh, yes - your quilts are wonderful, too, lol! That #4 is an easy fix. Funny how photographs can bring those mistakes to light, whereas you don't notice them just by looking. What an ambitious project you are undertaking with the QAL, but it will be an heirloom when you're done. Enjoy!

Hi Janice! OMG . . . is that the sweetest picture or what?!! The look on her face. Don't you just want to pick her up and see what's on her mind?!! Yeah, back to quilting. I have used a Pounce pad very successfully. I borrowed a friend's and she had it all primed. I then purchased my own and still don't have it ready to use. Be sure you follow the directions about pounding it 50 or 100 times before you use it! I tried not doing that and was covered with chalk dust . . . HAHA. So, learn from my stupid mistake. It works great once it's primed. ~smile~ Roseanne

ReplyDeleteaawww I have a baby grandson that I am missing dearly. 7 months old when he went to another state to spend a month with his daddy.....8 months when he is supposed to be home Saturday!

Orange is not my favorite, but I've come to like it more than I used to. I have used a pounce and stencil. I don't have great results because I find the chalk fades before I get there, but I love the idea of it. I wish I hadn't completely given up on FMQ.

ReplyDeleteI don't think your RSC blocks are too busy with all the orange-y goodness, and I love that pretty flimsy! You're off to a great start on your Civil War blocks with those yummy fabrics.
Like you and Emily (commenter above me), orange is not my favorite. However, when I worked on a pumpkin patch quilt last fall I came to appreciate all the various shades of orange, especially using the fabrics I bought from you! So now I actually have some orange scraps and have enjoyed working with it on this month's challenge.
