And the Winner is . . .

Orange swirl with calico and upon the suggestion of several of you I switched out the blue for the stripey fabric.  I LOVE collaborating.  So please keep participating when I ask for ideas.   I really  like it!!  This fabric combination left me with quite a bit left of both the swirl and the stripe so I have some more playing to do.

If you're just reading this post and wondering what is going on, you can read the last post to see what the voting was about.  I am trying to sew for this next month, until we get into our new home, using only one bag of scraps and not buying any fabric (except possibly for Stash Bee requests).

In addition to this result of scrap playing, I also had my June block of the month to do.  I actually had some free time today and got that put together as well.  Love this pattern!

I tried to do a fancy shot with a blue tractor but I don't like how it looks on point and the wind kept trying to blow it away.  There is NOTHING else around here but dirt!  Can't wait to get some landscaping around this place!

House update!  The sheetrock is up and they are taping now.  It shouldn't be long before we start seeing some finishes going in.  I showed you the outside paint last time but we didn't know what stones we would be using.
Here is the stone.  I'm not sure if you can see it in the picture but it has shiny flecks in the rock.

Here is the granite that will go on the kitchen and bathroom countertops and it has some shiny flecks too only bigger flecks! It is a choice that can go with either gray or beige.

I forgot to show the kind of kitchen cabinets we chose so that will be on the next update.  We haven't picked out light fixtures yet but are possibly going to have Brazilian Tigerwood hardwood floors!  Have you ever seen that stuff?  Take a peak here.  It is amazing!  It might be outside the budget so we'll see how all the costs are coming in closer to floor time.  I know, probably too busy for some of you but I just love all the different shades in this wood!

Speaking of floors, I would like to hear your opinion on the pros and cons of flooring in a sewing room.  Carpet or hardwood?  And why?  Thanks so much for all the opinions you share with me.  I love hearing from you! (Anja, you don't have to answer this one because you already told me!)

  1. Love the colours you have put into your June block of the month. They pop.

  2. Definitely hardwood in the sewing room--I always fear pins hiding in the carpeting.
    Beautiful star block!

  3. love the hard wood flooring - beautiful. I had carpet on the floor of the sewing room but with the redo we are going to have laminate wish it was hardwood but not in the budget. I don't know which I will prefer as have not had it before - love the colors of your blocks. The stone for outside looks lovely

  4. Hi Janice,
Every time I see your last name I want to ask if you have any relatives in the Racine, Wisconsin area? I worked with a Jeanine Holton - her husband was Bob, I think. Anyway, your new house looks wonderful! Love that gray stone you picked!! And your two blocks are great - I want that June block. HAHA Is that a CNH (New Holland) blue tractor I see?! I'm a Case girl (red) from way, way back. No green (Deere) allowed in my family. ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. I LOVE that stone! It will look amazing on the house. How can you not smile when you see sparkles? I also love both of your blocks. The blue tractor makes for a great back drop, there is beauty in everything.

  6. You made really good use of all those scraps, very colorful. Ooh, I really like the second block. The tigerwood floor would be really cool. The biggest problem with hardwood floors in Oklahoma is that they are really bad for accumulating dust and threads, but you only have to sweep them to clean them up, rather than get out the vacuum if you have carpeting.

  7. I just moved from a house where I had wood in the sewing room to one with carpet (not my choice, bought builder's spec house). You definitely want a hard floor for the sewing room. Easier to clean up threads and your sewing chair will roll easily - with carpet need some sort of mat for the chair to roll on. The only downside to a hard floor is that you'll have to swiffer it every time you turn around. I'd rather do that than vacuum.

  8. So much goodness in this post! Love how both of the blocks turned out. The swirls, calico and stripes is amazing! That stone is going to look fantastic! Also, I have to say hardwood floors for the sewing room. So much easier to sweep up fibers and thread, rather than getting them stuck on a vacuum roller to cut out later. Thanks so much for linking up with To-Do Tuesday!

  9. There must be an overwhelming number of choices when building a new house. I go crazy when we update just one room!

I love the block with the blue tractor. Back in our tractor days, we had a red Massey-Ferguson. :-)

  10. Most likely hardwood, I hate vacuuming thread off carpet!

  11. Love the addition of the stripe in your block. That really popped! I agree with the others that you want wood floors in the sewing room. Much easier to clean.

  12. Your blocks look great. And so does your house! I'm going to differ from everyone else on the wood/carpet in the sewing room. I prefer carpet b/c I like the softer surface with all the standing involved with quilting. I stand to cut and press. A magnet works wonders at picking up stray needles and pins.

  13. I vote hardwood, it is the easiest to keep clean no matter what you are doing? Carpet only is good until you spill something on it or drop pins on it. Love your house and choices. Can't wait to see Tigerwood Hardwood floors. So many choices, and you are making great ones.
Like the colors of your block.
I may of fixed it so you can comment. Not sure

  14. That flooring is just gorgeous. I would go with a hard surface in the sewing room. Although I have dropped scissors and made dings in mine, I can't imagine carpet with the strings and pins.

  15. That star in a star block is so cool!

  16. I love the block on the tractor shot! I'm with you, the block is better not on point, but it sure looks great against that blue paint :) Tractors are exotic to me, LOL!

I would vote for hardwood floors in the studio. So much easier to clean up all the bits of thread and the lint that just gets everywhere. I have an a/c intake right at my feet, and you wouldn't believe how much lint I clean out of that filter!! I'll take a photo next time. Anyway, that's all getting into the carpeting, too, so I wish I could rip it all out. Unfortunately, the carpet hides a lot of weird boat infrastructure so we're stuck with it.

I think the Tigerwood is really neat! Gosh, that would be wonderful underfoot...

  17. Ceramic tile. You will scratch wood with rolling casters. Ask me how I know.

  20. I'm a big ole rockhound so am loving all the stonework! I have carpet in my sewing room and totally wish I had wood floors. Thanks for linking up and know there is a button you can grab for your blog too!

  21. Great choice! I give it a 👍! Gosh, your house is going to be beautiful!

  22. We just built in 2015-16 and I opted for a dense, low pile (not Berber) carpet with floor mats under the chairs at the sewing machine and my desk. The cushioning offered by carpeting makes it a bit more comfortable to stand for cutting or basting sessions. Plus, I'm not fond of looking at the dust bunnies that inevitably collect on hardwood. Good luck with your decision! Terri

  23. Ooh sparkles! Love those stones, so pretty! I have carpeting throughout because we couldn't afford hardwoods, but definitely hardwoods in the sewing room for easy cleanup. Love that red, white, and blue block. It's awesome! Thanks for linking up to Wednesday Wait Loss.

  24. i love those blocks Janice, especially the star block, I can't remember seeing it before, of course that doesn't mean I haven't, just that my memory is bad hehe! I would go for a hard floor, I have carpet, it's hard to see dropped pins and threads can stick like glue and I have to get on my knees and pick them off individually. I have a floor duster for my downstairs floors and it is so quick to sweep them. Tigerwood would look so fantastic.

  25. Such cute blocks!!! Your home is looking amazing. Love those Tigerwood floors. I prefer hardwood floors in a sewing room for easier clean up. My longarm room has carpet--that's a must for a longarm. My sewing room is tiled, with a rug under the cutting table. Best wishes deciding what works for you.

  26. No carpet! Hard floor is best. All you need is a broom and an occasional wet wiping.
