Update on My Vintage Quilt

A few days ago I posted about this vintage quilt top:

I got a lot of GREAT ideas for what to do with it and some great help on trying to identify what it is.

The closest pattern was found in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns.
Thank you to Wanda at Exuberant Color for finding that!

The rows are offset rather than side by side and the in between pieces look to be more rectangular than square like the ones in my quilt.  But that's definitely the same idea.

Bonnie Stapleton of Institches with Bonnie also found a block that at least had the shape of the "bowtie" looking piece also in Barbara Brackman's Encylopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns.  Block 3350 and 3351. Versions of the Drunkard Trail.

In talking with an appraiser, she said that in appraiser lingo that quilt came from a quilter with a "deep scrap bag" which means it spanned several decades with the most recent fabric being from the 1940's.   If anybody out there has any of these fabrics (you can see each different one in detail here) please let me know.  I would love to purchase any scraps I can find to possibly use in the binding or back.     I really like the idea of trying to finish this quilt with vintage fabrics from the same era if possible, or at least close to it.    It will be difficult, but I love a good challenge!

  1. I hope you get enough extra fabric to finish this quilt "authentically"! Of course, you have a deep scrap bag, too, right? :)

Isn't it neat to try to figure out these older tops? I'm amazed that Wanda found something so close. Very cool!

  5. Yay on leads for what the quilt blocks are! Have you thought about contacting antique shops? We were at an antique shop in OH and they had tons of "grab bags" of vintage fabric for super cheap.

  6. Beautiful top! Love Barbara's book for identification. It's always my first go to stop when I have questions. OR, I ask her at a guild meeting. YES, she is my friend AND in my quilt guild!!! ;) Lucky, I know! As far as quilting, it can definitely take a custom treatment. A design in each area if you want to tackle that. Send me some close up fabric shots and I'll see if I have anything in my stash to match. What fun!!!
